ABSTRACT

With the change of the name from "SOARS Summer School" to "SOARS Work Shop", "SOARS Work Shop" (SOARS Summer School 2011) will be held for the first time. Same as "Summer School", "Work Shop" includes lectures, seminars, and presentations. The main work of "SOARS Work Shop" is divided into 3 parts: the lecture about the SOARS, the seminar of the SOARS model, and the construction of the model based on the group work. In the last day, the groups will have a contest and then present their results within limited time. From the theme setting, model construction and result presentation, they will experience the process of social simulation. In addition, we provide the opportunity to share opinions with professor Deguchi who is the leader of "SOARS summer school" and SOARS exploration team. Furthermore, Deguchi lab will host a party in order to promote the communication between SOARS project members and participants in the evening of the second day.

DETAILS

In this workshop, you will learn concepts of social simulation language: SOARS (Spot Oriented Agent Role Simulator) and how to use SOARS for making social simulation models. From this 3-days SOARS Workshop, you will know how to make a social simulation model step by step.

In the last day of SOARS Workshop, there is a presentation time. Groups, all participants are divided into several groups, make their own model and present it in this presentation time. Prof. Deguchi wil give you many good advices and you will have a good experience.

You need a laptop to participate to 1st SOARS Workshop. If you do not have a laptop, SOARS Project will rent it to you. If you want to rent a laptop in this workshop, please check the "Rent a Laptop" field when you fill in blanks of registration form.

SOARS needs Java1.6 to run and works on Windows XP, Vista, 7, Linux, and MacOS10.5, 10.6.

Programing skills of computer simulation languages are not required in this workshop. We are really welcome of non-programers contribution!
